Wildfur seemed to bask in her attention, then said with a smile, "I really like you! Er, I mean..." he looked almost astonished that he could voice his feeling to Rainfur without sounding like a lovestruck fool.

Wildfir seemed very relieved, when a thought hit him. "You mean...like the like-like way, or the yes-you-are-my-friend kind of way?" He obviously wanted the like-like way.

Mosspaw was secretly hearing all this and let out a gasp of half-triumph. So it was not definate! Luckily, it seemed that neither cat heard her gasp, because Wildfur said, "OK. Tell me when you've made up your mind, ok?" He looked half about to burst with anticipation.

Mosspaw's guts seemed to squirm around in her stomach as she realised that though it was not definate, it could still certainly happen. She got up from where she was lying and decided to hunt to keep her mind off her troubles.
Wildfur, however, seemed not to have any troubles. He was floating on a cloud! Though it way not definate, it could still certainly happen! He managed to meow out a "Thanks!"

Wildfur was taken aback. "I really like-like you too!" Then he thought for a moment. "But as long as we both know that I guess I should be nice to Mosspaw now...I mean...I wanted you to like me..." he broke off as he realised he had nor real excuse for treating Mosspaw like he had.
Mosspaw was just close eough to hear. She jumped with joy (silently, of course) because though she would never have Wildfur as her mate, at least they could remain friends!
